Portland, Ore., has a strong history and relevance to those in the LGBT community. The city’s LGBT history goes back to the first settlers in the area, with reports of indigenous people celebrating gay culture. Portland boasts vibrant cultural and nightlife scenes, a progressive political climate and a generally accepting attitude.

There are plenty of LGBT-owned and -friendly bars and clubs in Portland, whether you’re interested in a relaxing evening or boisterous night out. Crush Bar, The Fox & Hounds, Joq’s and Vendetta are among the most popular spots.

Portland is home to several yearly festivals. The annual pride parade and festival attracts visitors from all over the northwest. In addition to the celebrations, volunteer opportunities are available. The Portland Queer Film Festival celebrated its 20th year in 2016. The festival showcases films made by, about or of interest to the LGBT community.

There are many great organizations looking for volunteers and community engagement. The Q Center is a local non-profit community center, providing a safe space to celebrate and support the LGBT community. Basic Rights Oregon advocates for public policy needs of the LGBT community. Equity Foundation is a grant writing organization with the purpose of funding groups and programs advancing the LGBT community. Cascade AIDS Project is a community-based provider of HIV services, education and advocacy.
