Trends / LGBTQIA+

Once the stomping grounds of Pablo Escobar and considered one of the world’s most dangerous cities, in recent years Medellín transformed itself into a socially progressive bastion with excellent food, a vibrant culture and great parties. It’s also become the focal point of the LGBTQ community in Colombia.

The annual Medellín Pride festival is a highlight of the year, with the entire community taking to the street in June for a lively fiesta that lasts all day and night. Gay life in the city is centered on Poblado, where you’ll find may of the popular bars like Ink and Rainbow. Art lovers will enjoy a tour through Comuna 13, once a rundown region of the city that flipped the script and became a bustling part of Medellín full of local businesses and stunning street art.

When it comes to dining out, the city has much to offer in the way of delicious food. Carmen, in Poblado, serves South American dishes in an upscale atmosphere. Kabuki Cocina lies in the same part of town and has the best Peruvian and Japanese fusion food available.

The city also has plenty of gay-friendly places to stay. The Butterfly Gay Hostel is obviously a favorite among LGBTQ travelers, as is the NH Collection Royal for those seeking accommodations a little more ritzy.

Medellín’s comeback over the last decade has been astonishing to witness and the city has become one of the best LGBTQ destinations in all of South America. You can’t go wrong with a stay in this blossoming city.

What to Do During a Trip to Morro Bay, California

No, it’s not Monterey Bay. We’re talking Morro Bay, California, located about a 2.5-hour drive to the south, about halfway between San Jose and Los Angeles. A quieter destination, Morro Bay offers plenty for the outdoor adventurer to enjoy.

With most easily accessible by boat, the islands’ proximity to ports of Athens make the Saronic Islands an ideal destination for those preferring shorter boat rides. In fact, trips from Athens ports to the islands take only between 10 minutes and two hours, depending on the island you choose, making them perfect for day or weekend trips.
