Trends / LGBTQIA+

Savannah has always been a city where artists and eccentrics mingle, thanks to an open atmosphere and diverse population, which is why it’s a fantastic city for the LGBTQ community. The city itself is known for its beautiful architecture and vast assortment of museums, but most notably it’s the setting for John Berendt’s Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, which centered around the local gay community and featured some of its most prominent characters.

Today, Savannah is still a hub for the artistically inclined but also a great vacation destination for those who enjoy warm weather and beautiful beaches. Nearby Tybee Island is perfect for a daytrip and is one of the most popular beaches off the coast of Georgia. It’s also home to the annual Tybee Gay Rainbow Fest.

In town you’ll find numerous historic sites to explore including the Owens-Thomas House, Davenport House Museum and the Georgia Historical Society.

Art lovers will enjoy walking around downtown’s historic district, also home to the Savannah College of Art and Design. The presence of the school led to several galleries and performance venues opening in the area. Be sure to check out the bustling commercial area known as River Street, where you’ll find the majority of gay-friendly and -owned dining establishments. It’s also where you find the famous Club One, featured in the book.

The year-round lovely weather and welcoming environment make Savannah one of the best destinations for the LGBTQ community in the country.
