Known as the original market in the city, the origins of the Munich Christmas Markets date back to the 14th century. Or about three times as long as America has been in existence. First known as the Nicholaus Markets, Bavarians, Germans and tourists from all over gather in the wintry mix of small wooden shops boasting everything from hot tea to hand-carved wooden statues and symbols.
The enchanting festive season of Christmas rings alive, bringing a joyful atmosphere down the main causeway of Munich. From the city center’s Altststadt to Marienplatz, the heart of Munich boasts architectural prowess that goes unrivaled in the modern day.
Christkindlmarkt lines the cobblestoned streets of Marienplatz with tiny shops for a special four-week period. With access to food, beer and one-of-a-kind gifts, this festival truly rings in the Christmas spirit like no other. Nestled right in between regular shopping avenues, Munich’s eclectic mix of sightseeing, coupled with unparalleled eating and drinking, help make this festival truly one to remember.
