This month, celebrations will be popping up all over the United States to celebrate National Coming Out Day, which is today, Oct. 11.

This year is the 28th anniversary of National Coming Out Day, a day commemorating the 1987 March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, when thousands of people came together in order to raise awareness for the LGBT community during the AIDS crisis of the 1980s.

Today, National Coming Out Day celebrates “coming out,” the voluntary self-disclosure of one’s gender identity and/or sexual orientation. This holiday not only increases respect and awareness for the LGBT community, it promotes a safe world for LGBT individuals to live openly and truthfully.

How can you celebrate? Colleges and universities usually have their own National Coming Out Day events on campus, but there are many larger celebrations around the country open to the public.

The largest National Coming Out Day event is the Philadelphia OutFest, held the weekend before National Coming Out Day.

Check out any events that may be happening for National Coming Out Day, or LGBT History Month, in your local area to join in the celebration!

What to Do During a Trip to Morro Bay, California

No, it’s not Monterey Bay. We’re talking Morro Bay, California, located about a 2.5-hour drive to the south, about halfway between San Jose and Los Angeles. A quieter destination, Morro Bay offers plenty for the outdoor adventurer to enjoy.
