Nov. 14–20 was this year’s National Transgender Awareness Week, an important week for the LGBT community, especially after the highest numbers in anti-transgender hate crimes in the United States since 2013. As The Guardian gathered from a report by The Human Rights Campaign, “Among all 53 transgender murders from 2013 to 2015, not a single one was prosecuted or reported as a hate crime.”
More recently, the Human Rights Campaign, reported that in 2016 alone, “at least 19 transgender people fatally shot, stabbed and killed by other violent means.” Ten of these people were under the age of 30, one of whom was fatally shot at the age of 16.
It’s time to put an end to anti-transgender hate crimes. To get involved in your school, connect with Transgender Student Rights (TSR) or get involved in your school’s Gay Straight Alliance, (GSN). Involvement can help create safe spaces for LGBT and transgender youths, in addition to non-comforming youth.
