It’s been two years since a massive 7.8-magnitude earthquake devastated Nepal, reducing thousands of houses and temples to rubble and claiming nearly 9,000 lives.

The earthquake similarly devastated tourism numbers, but Nepal is making a comeback. The country is seeing its tourism numbers get back to pre-earthquake levels, as tourists flock to its mountain trekking trails and famous temples.

The Independent reports Nepal’s tourism numbers have not only rebounded but are now exceeding 2014’s pre-earthquake levels. And that’s good news for a country that relies heavily on tourism for its GDP.

“Nepal is outstripping growth because of the awareness raised,” Michael Edwards, regional director for the UK and Europe, Intrepid Travel, told Travel Weekly. “We have put extra resources into promoting the country, but the response from customers has been amazing.”

Many monuments are still undergoing or awaiting restoration, but many trekking trails are back open for hikers. There are still many fascinating medieval sites to visit in the Kathmandu Valley, as well as lush jungles and mountaintop tea houses.
