Cuba might be the first place that springs to mind when it comes to cigars, but some aficionados claim Nicaragua is, in fact, the best in the business.
While Nicaragua has always had tobacco plantations, it was the arrival of Cuban migrants following the 1959 revolution that really kickstarted the cigar industry. Not only did they bring considerable expertise, some managed to smuggle tobacco seeds with them so they could grow famous Cuban strains in Central America.
The industry has had its ups and downs due to waves of civil war and unrest in Nicaragua, but each time it has come back stronger. Growers even overcame the destruction wrought by Hurricane Mitch in 1998.
The best tobacco regions are found in the northwest of the country, such as the Jalapa Valley, Condega and Esteli. In fact, the town of Esteli is your best bet as a base if you want to explore the tobacco regions.
Another bonus is Nicaraguan cigars tend to be cheaper than Cuban smokes, so you will be getting top-quality cigars at bargain prices. In various cigar awards, Nicaraguan smokes have won top prizes in recent years, so it’s worth looking beyond Cuba if you want fine cigars.
