Colorado and the Swiss Alps are no doubt popular with tourists. If you prefer a bit of solitude up in the mountains, head to one of these off-the-beaten path ski destinations.
Big Sky, Mont.
Five thousand eight hundred acres of snow stretch across four mountains at Big Snow, providing plenty of runs for both advanced skiers and beginners. If you’re looking for a challenge, about a fifth of the runs are double black diamonds.
Yongpyong, South Korea
Yongpyong is one of the locations for 2018’s Winter Olympics in Korea. Just two hours away from Seoul, the resort town is known for its beautiful hills and delicious après-ski (Korean barbecue!).
Oukaïmeden, Morocco
Not many people can say they’ve skied in Africa. Located high in the Atlas Mountains, Oukaïmeden is a no-frills ski resort that costs just $10 a day. There’s no lift or amenities — just a donkey to reach the peak.
Jasná, Slovakia
If you’re looking for a ski destination in Europe that doesn’t break the bank, check out Jasná in Slovakia’s Chopok Mountains. The resort is well maintained and loved for its cheap food and beer.
Cerro Catedral, Argentina
Bariloche is a popular ski destination for South Americans, but 14 miles away is Cerro Catedral, a town known for having a variety of slopes and some great nightlife and festivals.
Snowbowl, Ariz.
Some people can’t decide if they want sun or snow on their vacation. In Arizona, you can have both. Snowbowl is 9,500 feet above sea level and just two hours away from Phoenix.
