Trends / Voluntourism

Visitors to Sri Lanka have long experienced taxi price gouging and unscheduled stops at souvenir shops, but that all may change with new government rules proposed for 2018.

The rules install working meters for all passenger three-wheelers, and a national three-wheeler regulatory group will be established for settling fare disputes. A new program will also train tuk tuk drivers as tour guides.

Tuk tuk drivers will also become licensed by the Sri Lanka Tourist Development Authority and will operate under official standards. They’ll be given lessons on etiquette, customer interactions, first aid, language skills and rules of the road.

And the tuk tuks will go green. New taxes on the import of fossil fuels will be introduced, along with a plan to lease less-polluting electric vehicles to drivers. The government hopes the entire fleet of 1.5 million tuk tuks will be powered by electricity by 2045.
