The city of Rome is perched atop one enormous archeological site. Beneath the cobblestone streets lies a vast underground network of tunnels weaving through structures built nearly three millennia ago. Now, you can head down below to discover them yourself with an Underground Rome and Catacombs Tour by Through Eternity Tours.
The tour takes you deep underground to explore the ancient city at a time when the Colosseum was one of the world’s greatest forms of entertainment. One of the first stops on the adventures is the Basilica of San Clemente, a 12th-century church with three underground levels still containing beautiful mosaics and frescoes. From there you’ll go on to explore Roman houses Basilica of Giovanni and Paolo and the stunning gardens that once bloomed there. Nearby you’ll stand in what was once a splendid piazza that held hundreds of citizens each day. Finally, you’ll head to the catacombs of Santa Domitilla, where you’ll explore miles of tunnels highlighting the historical rituals of early Christians in the region.
The Underground Rome and Catacombs Tour is open to groups of 13 or smaller and transportation between sites is provided. A ticket to the tour will grant you preferential access to most of the sites, making it a great way to avoid the lines. You’ll also be provided with headsets so you can clearly hear your guide as they give you great insight into the historical significance of each site.
The tour price is €84 and it lasts approximately 3.5 hours. You can find more information on the itinerary and ways to book your trip at the Through Eternity Tours website.
