Tough Mudder participants are about to get a lot dirtier with exhilarating new obstacles introduced to the 10–12-mile course of mud, ice, fire and electric shocks.

Competitors of the already tough endurance race can expect new and updated obstacles to challenge their mental and physical strength, including an event that will make you cry with a teargas-type substance.

Nolan Kombol, head of innovation at Tough Mudder, worked over the last year to refine the obstacles participants will face at events in dozens of cities across the globe in 2015.

New features include obstacles like the Human Hamster Wheel, involving a revolving set of monkey bars; King of the Swingers, a pendulum swing off a 12-foot platform; Cry Baby, a tunnel crawl through a substance similar to tear gas; Ring of Fire, a 20-foot drop through fire into a vat of water; and Dead Ringer, a traverse across a series of inclined pegs with hand-held rings.

Some classic obstacles were also reinvented, including the ice water plunge known as Arctic Enema and the slicked quarter pipe Everest, to offer new challenges that push participants to work as a team.

“The obstacle innovations we’ve made for 2015 will encourage participants to work together more than ever before, while still providing the personal challenge people have come to expect from Tough Mudder,” said Kombol. “We’re thrilled to provide a fresh experience for returning Mudders and 20 new reasons for first-timers to finally take the plunge.”

How to Explore Neuschwanstein Castle

Most people know Neuschwanstein Castle as Walt Disney’s inspiration for both Cinderella’s and Sleeping Beauty’s castles, but it is also filled with history and stories from German royalty. In 1868, King Ludwig II began construction of the medieval-style castle to live in. Sadly, it wasn’t finished before he died, so the king never got to see the finished product. Today, the castle is privately owned, but travelers can still explore it on a guided audio tour.
