This month, the Tribeca Film Festival returns to New York. In just more than 10 years, Tribeca has become one of the most anticipated festivals in the country and helped revitalize lower Manhattan in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001 attack.

Actor Robert De Niro, film producer Jane Rosenthal and her husband, real estate investor and philanthropist Craig Hatkoff, founded and organized the inaugural 2002 event in just 120 days. De Niro and Rosenthal previously worked together to found Tribeca Films in 2002, which aimed to revive interest in New York as a filming location. The film festival was created in that same community spirit, aiding in TriBeCa’s economic recovery and celebrating New York as a cinema town by showcasing the city’s best filmmakers and redefining the film festival experience. Since its founding, Tribeca is estimated to have had more than 4 million people attending 1,400 screenings, generating $750 million for New York City’s economy.

This year’s festival is sure to have something for everybody. Over the past decade Tribeca has built its prestige, with filmmakers opting to premier their work in New York over the more established festivals. Anticipated screenings include Dirty Weekend, Neil LaBute’s film about a layover from hell starring Matthew Broderick and Alice Eve; Montage of Heck, Brett Morgan’s authorized documentary on Kurt Cobain; and Live From New York!, Bao Nguyen’s documentary on the beginnings of Lorne Michael’s Saturday Night Live.

The Tribeca Film Festival will be held this year April 15–26. To learn more about the festival and screenings, visit tribecafilm.com.
