Trends / Unique Itineraries & Tours

Visiting the Blue Lagoon during your Icelandic layover is a popular option for many individuals traveling between the United States and Europe, via Icelandair. The airline makes this particularly easy, with its layover programs that allow you to extend your stay for no added airfare costs.

Iceland’s one major airport is in Keflavik, well situated for layover activities, regardless of how much time you have. Reykjavik is only about a 45-minute drive or bus ride away, with all its dining, museums and other attractions, but the Blue Lagoon is even closer.

A destination made famous for its tranquil, vibrant blue waters surrounded by lava rock, the Blue Lagoon is just about a 20-minute bus ride from the airport. Getting a lift is easy. Shuttle services provided by tour groups such as Reykjavik Excursions will pick you up at the airport and drive you there at nearly any time of day, and you can reserve your spot online far in advance. If you use Reykjavik Excursions, you’ll also be provided with a timetable of pick-up times, and you just show up outside the Blue Lagoon at whatever time works best for you to head back to the airport (pick-up times are an hour apart), or even further to Reykjavik if your layover is longer.

When arriving at the Blue Lagoon, your visit is made easy. They have complimentary space for you to store your luggage and other belongings, from backpacks and carry-ons to larger suitcases and multiple items. Then, you file in line to purchase your pass.

The Blue Lagoon is set up much like a spa, with men’s and women’s locker rooms, plenty of showers and fluffy white robes. Plus, after enjoying your dip in the lagoon, they offer everything you need to get ready for your flight, whether that’s just a hair dryer and space to fix your makeup or a nice meal.

Visiting the Blue Lagoon during your Icelandic layover is easy, no matter how long you plan to stay in Iceland. With multiple vendors anticipating your needs while on the island, you’ll not be left wanting when it comes to enjoying a relaxing reprieve between flights.
