Superstitious travelers are in for a treat when visiting Mexico’s Island of the Dolls, or Isla de las Muñecas as it’s locally known. The floating garden is located in Xochimilco, just south of Mexico City and reportedly takes two hours by gondola to reach.

The ride there is brimming with lush greenery unlike anything you’ll find at home. Once you arrive, you’ll walk into a secluded scene straight out of a horror movie, with hundreds of decrepit dolls hanging from the trees watching you as you make your way through the area.

The dolls are remnants of a local legend that has haunted the region for decades. It’s said a little girl drowned in the waters surrounding the island and the dolls have been hung as a tribute to her lingering soul. When the girl drowned, a local man was unable to save her, according to the story, so he developed an obsession with appeasing her ghost.

Locals and visitors alike insist you can hear the muffled screams of both the girl and the man when wandering around the island. It certainly makes for a creepy tale, if nothing else. Next time you’re in Mexico it might be worth checking out, just to see if the dolls whisper to you like tourists say.
