Habitat for Humanity is an international, non-governmental, non-profit organization devoted to addressing issues of poverty by building simple, affordable homes for those in need. The organization was founded in 1976. Since its inception, Habitat has grown to assisting 1,400 communities throughout the United States and in nearly 70 countries worldwide. More than 6.8 million people have safe and affordable shelter thanks to Habitat for Humanity.
There are a variety of ways to get involved by volunteering, donating and supporting. To get started, search by zip code on the website for your local Habitat. You can volunteer in your local community or travel to a new destination to help. Long-term opportunities are available for service including partnerships with groups like AmeriCorps. Volunteer as a group project or search for local build events you can participate in with your school, business or community group.
If you can’t currently donate your time, consider sending a monetary donation to Habitat for Humanity. You can also support the organization through shopping at a Habitat ReStore. The non-profit home improvement stores and donation centers collect and sell new and gently used furniture, appliances, home accessories and building materials to the public. ReStores are independently owned and operated by local Habitat organizations, with proceeds going to Habitat.
