Walking tours of the British Isles are a good way to unplug from the everyday grind while on vacation in a cooler climate without feeling too sedentary. Like Germany, there is a great walking tradition built into the culture of the island and it is a great way to immerse oneself like a local.
If the English Lake District feels a little too crowded for your taste, take yourself north to the rugged brother of England and enjoy all Scotland has to offer. When planning your trip keep in mind a few things. Summer is not the time to go. Scotland suffers from an infestation of tiny mosquitos called midges and, in some instances, these are not so small. Summer often requires locals to wear special gear when venturing too far afield of urban centers, particularly in the highlands. Keep on top of these guys by checking the midge forecast while planning your trip.
Fall and spring, however, are generally good times to go. There are a lot of wonderful walking trips to take and it is incredibly well organized online. Check out Walkhighlands; this site can help you plan your route and organize accommodations. If you don’t like to camp, do not fear because these trails are organized perfectly for those who prefer a hostel or bed and breakfast.
Additionally, if your pack is something you do not want to be encumbered with for 10–20 miles a day, you can even arrange for a service to transport your pack to the next night’s stop for a reasonable price. To get a great overview of all the trails, check out Scotland’s Great Trails. Happy walking!
