Ireland is a popular destination for hikers and cyclists, with rolling green hills, majestic castles and postcard-worthy cliffs. As of March, outdoors enthusiasts now have yet another opportunity to explore Ireland’s natural beauty via the country’s longest hiking and biking trail, the Waterford Greenway.

Stretching for nearly 30 miles, the greenway connects the towns of Waterford and Dungarvan. The route was once a train line that connected the two towns and was considered one of the most scenic routes in the country. After operating for 89 years, the Waterford Council obtained the necessary permission and licensure from CIE (the Irish railroad company) to begin construction on the hiking and cycling path. After 15 years and €15 million, the greenway has come to fruition and hopes to attract tourists to the breathtaking landscape.

Visitors to the greenway can rent bikes in Waterford and ride them all the way to the coast of the country. Bridges, viaducts and tunnels make up the scenic route. Guests are advised to keep to the left and pass on the right, to use the trash cans responsibly and to keep all dogs on leashes. Cars, camping and open fires are not allowed along the greenway.
