The Mob Museum, the National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement debuted a large renovation this spring, with new exhibition and experiential spaces. This recent renovation was the largest improvement project the museum underwent since opening.

The new exhibition space is the “Organized Crime Today” exhibition, which focuses on the evolution of organized crime into what law enforcement sees today. While many people think of the mob and organized crime activity as all Al Capone-esque figures posted up in speakeasies and casinos, the exhibition reveals organized crime of the modern era, including international crime networks that deal in trafficking, cybercrime, money laundering and more. Mention is given to specific crime groups still active today. The exhibit features artifacts and a touchscreen wall.

The two experiential spaces are the “Use of Force Training Experience” and “Crime Lab Experience.” In the “Use of Force Training Experience,” guests receive an intense training session incorporating both digital and real-life role-playing scenarios that demonstrate how law enforcement responds to real or perceived threats.

“The Crime Lab” explores five forensic topics with museum educators and multimedia providing expert knowledge on forensic science. Stations explain the basics of death investigations, DNA profiling, fingerprint analysis, crime scene investigation and firearms examination.

Other museum refurbishments wrap up this month, with additions including an enhanced prohibition history exhibition and a working speakeasy and distillery.
