Whales are the planet’s largest and most majestic creatures. Luckily, most of them are also nice enough to let you get up close and personal with them. If you’ve ever wanted to try and swim with whales are a few of the best places to do it.
Gold Coast, Australia
The Gold Coast teems with humpback whales during the summer months, making it the perfect spot to spend a few hours swimming offshore. There are a few guides willing to take you, but none of them can guarantee the whales will be willing to play.
Sri Lanka
During the months of March and April, hundreds of blue whales drift through the Indian Ocean off the shores of Sri Lanka. These 75-foot behemoths are gentle giants and most outfitters will enable you to get pretty close.
Tonga
Tonga is a virtually untouched paradise full of clean, sparkling beaches and little human impact. Perhaps that’s why so many whales enjoy wandering past the island each year. There are enough humans on Tonga to help you ride out into the waves, though, so look around and find the right trip for you.
Silver Bank, Dominican Republic
Thousands of humpbacks converge on the Silver Bank each year during mating season, making it the opportune time to go for a dip among giants. Conscious Breath Adventures runs an outfit that allows tourists to swim with whales while also helping conservation efforts in the area.
