This year’s Winter X Games return to Buttermilk Mountain, Colo., Jan. 26–29, despite a late winter causing rushed preparation.
The situation is similar to recent X Games of the past, where shifting weather patterns from climate change pushed snowfalls later in the year. Preparations that typically take place over two months have to be compressed into a shorter amount of time, a difficult but doable challenge, especially for massive structures like the superpipe, a halfpipe with 22-foot walls.
ESPN is also making an effort bring a festival element to the Winter X Games, bringing in musical performances, video games and a slew of on-site amenities like art workshops, athlete meet-and-greets and sports tournaments at ESPN Zone. This year’s performers include Bassnectar opening up the weekend, Anderson.Paak, The Chainsmokers and G-Eazy closing out the event.
Last year’s Winter X Games debut in Oslo, Norway was a success, bringing the event back for a second consecutive year at Hafjell ski resort. The Games turned out to be popular for youth in Norway, where there is obviously a big winter sports scene, but no event dedicated to extreme sports. This year’s event will feature Big Air and Slopestyle disciplines for both ski and snowboard.
