While perhaps surprising to some of the more well-known and established ski destinations in North America and Europe, Japan is quickly becoming one of the most popular winter sports destinations in the world.
Japan hosted the Winter Olympics twice, due to its massive amount of fine-quality powder — 32 to 60 feet per season, world-class resorts and smaller crowds, as well its rich cultural offerings and renowned natural beauty.
Japan is responding to the recent rise in ski tourism with several new hotels and resorts, including one of the world’s only The Ritz-Carlton Reserves, the first ski property from the brand’s higher luxury tier, as well as a new all-inclusive Club Med resort, which features its own mountain.
There are dozens of resorts to choose from on the north island of Hokkaido and the main island of Honshu. Visit Niseko for premier tree skiing and a vibrant nightlife; Furano for its long groomed runs and off-piste riding; or Nozawa Onsen for an authentic Japanese experience, hot springs and world-class skiing and snowboarding trails.
The Japan winter sport season is generally around mid to late December and goes until late March or early April.
