Lake Atitlan developed into the epicenter of yoga culture in Guatemala, although it’s worth pointing out the retreats largely cater to foreign customers. There are various retreats dotted around the shores of the lake, starting with Villa Sumaya in Santa Cruz La Laguna, Yoga Forest in San Marcos La Laguna and Mystical Yoga Farm in the same town.
All of them offer group or personal retreats for varying lengths of time, as well as teacher training courses for those really looking to hone their practice. A special mention is necessary for the Yoga Forest, which also offers sound ceremonies, shamanic healing cleanses and other treatments.
One of the oldest yoga facilities at Lake Atitlan is Mahadevi Ashram in San Marcos. There is an incredible range of retreats available, and it’s the largest of the yoga centers around the lake.
If you want to practice yoga elsewhere, Casa San Juan near Antigua is a great choice. It is set in amazing gardens and the retreats are carried out in conjunction with Ayurveda practitioners who can draw up a specific diet for your needs.
