The Italian island of Sardinia sits right below its French neighbor Corsica in the Mediterranean Sea, but draws vast differences despite its proximity. The northern coast of Sardinia centers around the largest city, Olbia, but getting out of the city is the best way to dive into the local culture and truly escape to the hidden beaches and coves.
Approximately 30 minutes northwest of Olbia is the former fishing village of Cannigione, a small inlet town that attracts visitors to its stunning Costa Smeralda and small-village ambiance.
On Mondays, visit the open-air market from 8 a.m.–1 p.m. to stock up on local produce, seafood and meats for meals to last the week.
Although a bit pricey, visiting Cannigione and not chartering a motorboat or sailboat for a snorkeling or diving excursion would be a huge disservice. Contact one of the local boat rental agencies for prices for tours, excursions to the nearby archipelago and (if you’re certified) diving opportunities.
For a less-expensive afternoon, grab a towel and some sunscreen and head to one of the area’s beaches, like Spiaggia Barca Bruciata.
A romantic, rustic and authentic dinner awaits at Agriturismo La Colti, an estate just south of Cannigione that serves quintessential Italian favorites directly from the farm, including salami, vegetable soups, lamb and rabbit skewers and fresh goat’s cheese.
