Under $100 / Latin America

In southeastern Peru near the Urubamba Valley of the Andes mountain range sits Cusco, Archaeological Capital of the Americas and UNESO World Heritage Site.

As the site of the historic capital of the Inca Empire from the 13th to the 16th-century Spanish conquest, Cusco’s indigenous and colonial history is palpable.

One of the best ways to see the city’s most notable sites and landmarks is with a tourist ticket, which grants entrance to the city’s top museums and historic sites for approximately $48.

Visit the Saksaywaman ruins, the Temple of the Sun, Inca Palace, Cathedral of Santo Domingo and lesser-visited ruins including Incahuasi, the highest Inca site; the sculpture garden at Nusta Hisp’ana; and Tipón, a 15th-century ruin with working water channels.

The city center retains many buildings, plazas, streets and churches from pre-Columbian times and colonial buildings, which can be enjoyed for free. Wander the city’s picturesque streets, lined with old houses built by the Spanish over important Inca foundations; see the Hatun Rumiyuc stone wall, the palace of Inca Roco, the Stone of Twelve Angles, the Convent and Church of la Merced, and Iglesia del Triunfo, the first cathedral built in Cusco in 1539.

Use your tourist ticket to get into the Museo de Arte Precolombino, Casa Concha Museum and Museo Inka.

Outside of the city, travel the Inca Trail up Machu Picchu, named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Cusco is an important agricultural region making for delicious and fresh food, prepared with modern and traditional Andean techniques and ingredients. Experience authentic and affordable Peruvian food at Organika or go to Green Point for fresh, creative vegan dishes. Other great options for a cheap, delicious lunch or dinner include Cultura Paraiso, La Boheme, Tacomania and Pankracio.

Getting around Cusco is easy, as many of the city sights are within walking distance of the Plaza de Armas in the historic center. Save yourself some money and tackle the city by foot. There are also plenty of taxis available, which are regulated and charge standard rates. Licensed companies include Okarina and Aló Cusco.
