Under $100 / Europe

Home to two picturesque coastlines, two national parks and five official Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Devon is one of the most beautiful counties in England. And because there is so much to do outdoors, it’s the perfect destination for travelers on a budget.

From exploring pebbled beaches, coves and cliff-edged bays to cycling through rolling green hills and charming Georgian towns, Devon provides endless opportunities for nature lovers and adventure travelers. If you plan to stay in the area, affordable accommodations are easy to come by in the land of bed and breakfasts, and inexpensive and delicious local delicacies, like famous Devonshire teas, oven-warm scones and jams, can be found everywhere you go.

The rural nature of Devon makes it ideal for exploring at little to no cost. Hit the South West Coast Path for walking or hiking or try climbing, white-water rafting, horse-back riding, canoeing off the coast or snorkeling in what has become known as the English Riviera.

Visit the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, which reveals the Earth’s history in geological formations stretching back more than 250 million years. The Rougemont Gardens, listed on the National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens, was originally part of the defenses of Exeter Castle and was converted into gardens in the 18th century. The Exmouth Local Nature Reserve is a massive area of tidal sand at the southern end of the Exe estuary and is one of the biggest local nature reserves in Devon. Experience all three for free.

Visitors can also spend an entire afternoon at Dart Estuary, one of the county’s prime destinations for green tourism. Cruise up the river, kayak and take advantage of the cycle route and footpath to scope the beautiful landscape and bird watch.

If museums and historic buildings strike your fancy, there are several to see, all are affordable. Visit the Torquay Museum, home to the Agatha Christie gallery, fossils more than 44,000 years old and artifacts of Devon farm life in the 1800s, all for only £6. The Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery boasts a stunning architectural construction and interesting displays drawn from the city’s collection of glassware, Westcounty silver, clocks and watches, and admission is free. Explore the stately homes that dot the county, such as the Greenway House, home to famous author, Agatha Christie; Bradley Manor, a medieval manor house set in the woodlands; the Coleton Fishacre House & Garden, built during the Jazz Age; and Compton Castle, a manor house dating from 1340–1480. All of these breathtaking properties cost around £6 to visit.

Shopping isn’t out of the question in Devon, even on a budget, with several arts and crafts venues in the West Country, local art, pottery, photography, handmade furniture and more. Or visit Dulverton, packed with antique shops and quaint bookstores.

While you can find several great restaurants to really get a taste of Devon, scope out the cozy little cafés and farmers markets that dot the countryside. Stop in Home Farm Café and unwind after a stroll around the National Trust Estate, and enjoy local food, a rotating daily menu, fresh-baked bread and to-go picnic boxes.

Tea on the Green in Exeter, as the name implies, focuses on tea and small treats. Sit outside on the cobblestone street across from a beautiful cathedral, and enjoy a local beer, glass of wine or ginger beer.

In true English tradition, pubs are not difficult to come by in Devon. Visit the award-winning Poltimore Inn, and enjoy local beer in the beer garden and beautiful countryside views, while you indulge in house-smoked meat, fish and cheese.

Enjoy a light authentic English lunch at The Babbacombe Inn Torquay, serving authentic curry, fish and chips, steak and ale pie and more.

Getting from one place to another is easy and even enjoyable in this picturesque region. Renting a car is the best way to get around the county of Devon, and several options are available. You can also plan a day by bus, coach or train. The train is a great way to take in the scenery as you hit one small town after another. For no cost, rent a bike for a couple pounds and work your way around the beautiful county.
