Greenwich Village,. often referred to by locals as the Village, is a neighborhood on the west side of Lower Manhattan. It’s NYC’s neighborhood of artists and one of the best places to go for bohemian fare. There’s much to do and see in the city with an ambiance created by leafy parks, historic architecture and cobbled streets and sidewalks.
Start off your day at The Grey Dog. Started by two brothers in 1996, The Grey Dog exudes comfort and hospitality, yet is inexpensive and creates mouthwatering food. One of the restaurant’s crowd pleasers is the Grey’s Dog breakfast for $13.95 with eggs any style, French toast or pancakes and bacon, sausage or ham. If you want to order something on the lighter side, try the poached eggs and avocado salad over arugula with smoked salmon, fresh lemon, flatbread and olive oil for $14.95. The restaurant also offers catering for those looking to throw a large event.
After breakfast, take a walking tour around the neighborhood embracing all of the wonderful architecture. The Village is one of the few to have a wooden home dubbed Twin Peaks, as they are technically illegal due to fire codes. The home, built in 1830, was a wooden-roof cabin for artists. You’ll also find Federal-style homes, Victorian Gothic structures, Gothic Revival and more.
For lunch, try Loring Place. Dan Kluger, the chef, focuses on farm-to-table, with a strong focus on seasonal produce. The fare is fresh and the restaurant is bright, crisp and modern. Order the crispy spiced cauliflower for $10 or Brussels sprouts with apple, avocado and honey-mustard vinaigrette small plate for $14. If you’re in the mood for pizza, try the spicy meatball with fennel, mozzarella and shepherd’s basket cheese for $17.
To top off lunch, head to Pasticceria Rocco, a sweet tooth’s dream. Here you’ll find pistachio-laced cannoli stuffed fresh, moist black-and-white cookies, authentic Italian-style cheesecake or bananas foster and much more.
Be sure to check out Employees Only, a retro-looking, Prohibition-style bar on Hudson Street. Let the cocktails take you back to the ‘20s with specialty drinks created to impress.
