Under $100 / Europe

The past decade has seen the coastal city of Izmir undergo quite the revitalization, making it one of the most exciting cities to explore in the country. If you’re only in town for a day, don’t fret, there are plenty of things you can see and do and still stay on budget.

In the morning, make a quick pit stop at Gozlemecim to scarf down some delicious Turkish pancakes. A plate here will run you roughly $10.

From there, start with a trip to Konak Square. It serves as the de facto heart of Izmir and is really just a small square surrounded by quaint shops and restaurants. It’s within walking distance to the Clock Tower and a mosque to explore, so be sure to check them out while you’re there. If you plan on buying goods, try not to spend more than $20.

Next, be sure to check out the Agora Open Air Museum. It’s a great historical relic full of artifacts and ancient sights to behold. Entrance is $5 plus the cost of a metro service to get there, so altogether around $15.

For lunch, make your way to Topcu for some traditional Turkish kebabs. It’s expensive, around $20, so don’t eat too hearty of a meal. The views of the port are fantastic here.

Once you’re full, take the afternoon to enjoy the sights by walking the Kordonboyu. There are numerous activities that take place along the sea here, so you won’t be short of things to do and it’ll save you money since walking around is free!

For dinner, stop in at Tavaci Recep Usta for more traditional Turkish fare. The lamb platter is absolutely delectable, though expensive, so prepare to drop around $30 a meal.

How to Explore Neuschwanstein Castle

Most people know Neuschwanstein Castle as Walt Disney’s inspiration for both Cinderella’s and Sleeping Beauty’s castles, but it is also filled with history and stories from German royalty. In 1868, King Ludwig II began construction of the medieval-style castle to live in. Sadly, it wasn’t finished before he died, so the king never got to see the finished product. Today, the castle is privately owned, but travelers can still explore it on a guided audio tour.
