Under $100: Jamestown, Va.

America’s first permanent settlement has more to offer than archeological digs and glassblowing demonstrations. A visit to Jamestown, Va., can serve as an enriching history lesson, but also a delightful few days in the South.

Although the original settlement is mostly comprised of attractions that focus on the British arrival and what life was like in the 1600s, the surrounding areas and Williamsburg feature modern-day amenities like restaurants and hotels. Kick off a day of history with a cup of coffee and pastry at Aromas Café, located just beside the campus of the College of William and Mary.

Next, travel back in time to the days of the early English settlers as the swampy land next to the James River comes alive. Visit a Native American village, climb on board a replica of one of the ships that sailed from England in 1607 or explore a fort that the settlers used to protect themselves. Tickets to the exhibits are $14 for adults and are valid for seven days.

At lunchtime, grab a table at Dale House Café, a riverside restaurant with views of the James and a lively environment.

After a day of exploration and revisiting the third-grade textbook, reward yourself with a few glasses of wine at The Cork Café in Williamsburg, located inside the Wine Seller wine shop. A glass of house wine is $4.49, while featured wines are $7.99, and food is served, with all entrees and sandwiches less than $10.
