Rural Lehigh Valley, Pa., is set just a short drive from the major cities of Philadelphia, New York, Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Filled with picturesque small-town Americana and the three primary regional cities of Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton, you’ll uncover plenty to do and see when you pass through for the day or weekend.
Enjoy an upscale breakfast in Allentown at The Dime, with locally sourced ingredients and an elegant dining space. Menu items include the William Penn Benedict (poached eggs with scrapple — a Pennsylvanian specialty — cream cheese and Hollandaise sauce); chocolate chip pancakes with caramelized bananas and candied walnuts; and mushroom toast with fried eggs and a spinach and goat cheese gratinee. Breakfast is affordable at less than $15 for most items.
While in Allentown, enjoy a visit to the America on Wheels Museum, featuring exhibits on nearly all modes of land transportation, as well as a special focus on the history of Mack Trucks and the state’s highway system. Tickets are $10.
Head to Bethlehem, Pa., for another historic site, the National Museum of Industrial History. Located in the century-old Bethlehem Steel facility on the largest private brownfield in America, it offers exhibits on America’s industrial past and even recent innovations. A special exhibit is on display through October on printing and papermaking. Entry is only $12.
While in Bethlehem, grab lunch at Apollo Grill, in the heart of historic downtown. Award-winning nearly since its opening in 1999, it features an extensive menu with sandwiches, pasta, soups, salads, pizza and more extravagant entrees. To stick to a conservative lunch budget of less than $15, try the grilled roasted turkey and brie (pears, bacon, turkey, maple mayonnaise and arugula on wheat bread); the flat iron steak sandwich with caramelized onions, horseradish creme and pea shoots on a grilled baguette; or a half portion of penne with chicken, asparagus, peas, grape tomatoes, red onion, arugula, parmesan and a white wine lemon-herb garlic butter.
In Easton, head to Weyerbacher Taproom for a free tour of the facility on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Check the calendar for other upcoming events during your visit, such as Arts, Crafts & Drafts or Pints & Poses. Weekend visits are rewarded with a rotating schedule of food trucks as well, so you can snack while you sip.
Continue the fun by rounding out the evening at 3rd & Ferry Fish Market, also in Easton, where you can enjoy a seafood-focused menu, raw bar and 16 taps with craft beer. Favorites include the lobster roll, crab horizon mac and cheese and pan-seared scallops, while a top pick on the cocktail menu is the Crabby Mary — a bloody Mary with shrimp cocktail, crab and a crab cake slider.
