Under $100: León, Mexico

León has a unique reputation as one of the leading leather manufacturers and is lovingly nicknamed “Shoe Capital of the World.” This, combined with is vibrant selection of restaurants, museums and recreational activities, make a wonderful destination travelers are missing. Spending a day here is easy and affordable.

Start with breakfast at Almuerzos del Moral for a hearty meal of sausage and sweet bread for less than $10.

Begin your exploration at the Museum of Art and History of Guanajuato. The museum contains several cultural exhibits detailing life in the state of Guanajuato throughout each historical period along with work from local artists. Entrance is only $1.

Next, head to the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of the Light. It’s the seat of the Archdiocese of León and has stood since 1746 as a great example of the combination between Baroque and Neoclassical architectural styles. It’s free to have a peek around as long as there is no service in progress.

For lunch, check out Guacamayas Javier. The namesake sandwiches are made with fried pork skin and avocado and covered in salsa. Though typically a breakfast food, they’re great at any time of the day. A meal will cost $10.
