Under $100 / Europe

Lisbon is an affordable European city. Follow our tips for packing the most into a visit for less than $100 a day.

Start your day with breakfast at Confeitaria Nacional. The bakery provides an excellent selection of pastries and other sweets. Order a famous Portuguese egg custard tart, pastel de nata, and a coffee for about $4. Make your way up to the Castelo de São Jorge. The Moorish castle is located on a hill overlooking the city and Tagus River. Adult admission costs about $10. The castle gets crowded, so, if possible, arrive right when it opens to beat the crowds.

For lunch, go to Time Out Market Lisbon. The popular food hall hosts dozens of vendors selling everything from traditional Portuguese dishes to pizza. Lunch costs less than $10. Next, visit the Carmo Archaeological Museum. Housed in a former convent, the museum houses ancient relics among the remains of the breathtaking building. Adult admission costs about $6. Stroll through the nearby shopping areas along Rua do Carmo. Here you’ll find affordable souvenirs mixed in with pricier stores.

Have dinner at Cantinho do Avillez. The restaurant from famous Portuguese chef Jose Avillez boasts contemporary Portuguese cuisine. Spend $25–30. End your evening people watching and bar hopping in the lively Barrio Alto neighborhood. There are many great spots to check out including The Old Pharmacy, Majong and BA Wine Bar Barrio Alto. Drink prices vary by location, though bottles of wine start around $10.
