Under $100 / Europe

Lyon, France’s third-largest city, is known for many things — culture, history, gastronomy and the birthplace of cinema — and it can all be enjoyed for less than $100 per day.

The city is located in the Rhone-Alpes region at the junction of the Rhone and Saone rivers. Its picturesque city center reflects more than 2,000 years of history, with its Roman Ampitheatre des Trois Gaules, the medieval and Renaissance architecture in Vieux Lyon and the modern Confluence district on the Presquile peninsula.

For no cost, you can wander the streets of the city’s distinctive neighborhoods, such as Old Lyon; Fourviere hill, known for its churches and religious landmarks; and Guillotiere, a picturesque and diverse district.

Lyon is the ideal walking city, perfect for travelers with a modest budget. See the perfectly preserved Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourviere, built in 1884, positioned on a hill overlooking the city. You can hike to the top to take in the views along the way or take a cable car.

Stroll through Vieux Lyon (Old Lyon), home to beautiful architectural landmarks such as the traditional Traboules and charming bars and restaurants. While there are several pricey, tourist-focused restaurants, there are plenty of hidden gems where you can grab a coffee and traditional French pastry for a couple euro.

Explore the plentiful offerings of Lyon’s Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse indoor farmers market, featuring everything from fresh local produce to handmade cheese and local wine. It’s the perfect place to grab something traditional, homemade and delicious for only a few euro.

Art lovers can enjoy an impressive collection at the Musée de Beaux-Arts, one of the largest French and European museums. Located in the heart of Lyon between the Rhone and Saone rivers, the museum itself dates back to the 17th century, featuring stunning original architecture. Check it out for only €8.

For a quirky museum experience, spend some time at the Musée Miniature, home to more than 100 scenes crafted by world-renowned miniaturists. Enjoy the museum’s unique offerings for €9.

For a quick, cheap and delicious bite, head to Gourmix for a popular French-style sandwich on homemade bread. There are a variety of options from authentic French cheeses and quality cured meats to specialties like foie gras, and all cost around €4.

For a classic French meal in a cozy environment, try L’Epicerie, where you can find an authentic dish for only a few euro. Popular choices are the three cheese and pear tartine and open-faced grilled sandwiches.

The Crock’n’roll is another great option for classic French delicacies, such as croque-monsieur and other delicious fried sandwiches that you can grab for a few euro.

Getting around Lyon is a breeze, with buses, trams and a metro system that services the entire city for only around €1 per ticket or an all-day transport pass for €5.

Interior Upgrades Begin Rolling Out Across United Fleet

United Airlines is in the midst of a major initiative to modernize its fleet over the next several years. After first announcing the plan in 2021, planes fitted with United’s signature interior are finally beginning to appear across the airline’s narrowbody fleet of Boeing and Airbus planes. United flyers are sure to notice these enhancements from the moment they step on board: Each new or updated plane sports remodeled seats, seatback entertainment screens for everyone, Bluetooth connectivity and more, all adding up to a better experience on every journey.
