Mobile sits near Alabama’s Gulf Coast, in the crease formed by the Mobile Bay. A charming Southern city of quintessential azaleas, oak trees and historic homes, the city has plenty to offer in terms of history, culture and dining.

Start your day with breakfast at Spot of Tea, a local’s favorite in downtown Mobile. Tea and breakfast are held in a 1830s building with five quirky, themed rooms; budget $25.

Spend time wandering downtown’s historic buildings and sites, including Fort Conde, a reconstruction of a 1723 fort with historic artifacts and exhibits. Admission is free.

Head halfway across the Causeway that spans Mobile Bay for a scenic seafood lunch at Felix’s Fish Camp. Budget around $25.

Another must see is the USS Alabama, a battleship on Mobile Bay that allows exploration. Entry is $15 for adults.

Since you’re in the South, it’d be criminal to miss out on classic barbecue. The best is the Brick Pit, a hole-in-the-wall adorned with hand-written messages on its walls and ceilings — most of them about college football. Your remaining budget will cover you for ribs, pulled pork, sides and the restaurant’s famous banana pudding.
