The Italian city of Perugia sits in the hills of the central Umbria region, home to a large university.
For breakfast, check out the traditional breads and cakes at Pasticceria Antica Perugia ($5). Sip on an espresso and then head off to explore the charming streets of the old town, home to the Maggiore fountain, the cathedral and the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria, where you can see artwork by local artists in a medieval palace.
After getting a feel for the city, go for lunch at Osteria a Priori. This trendy spot focuses on local ingredients and weekday lunch menus can be had for as little as $11. Lunch is served 12:30–2:30 p.m., so make sure you time it right.
In the afternoon, take a stroll around Umbrò. This café, restaurant, cultural space and boutique supermarket is a great place for people watching, having a coffee and picking up some unique souvenirs. Take a walk up to Basilica di San Pietro to marvel at the 10th-century architecture before heading off to fashionable bar Kundera for a sundowner on the terrace (cocktails from $4).
When you get hungry, head to Nadir. This atmospheric spot serves Italian and Mediterranean food in a space underneath the oldest cinema in Perugia ($20).
