The Puebla area is home to more than 2 million people, making this a sizeable city to explore.
The best breakfast in town is served up at La Fonda de Santa Clara, with a hearty buffet perfect for setting you up for the day ahead ($12). Digest your meal as you stroll around Museo Amparo, home to one of the best collections of Mexican art in the world (free).
Lunch at Entre Tierras, a mainstay of the city’s vibrant culinary scene. It’s a bit more expensive than the average restaurant, but worth every penny for the fresh, seasonal fare on the menu ($20). In the afternoon, shop for souvenirs at the arts and crafts market, which dates from the 18th century ($20), and stop in at the central market to see the huge array of fresh fruit and vegetables.
If all of the food has made you hungry, you won’t be disappointed by dinner at El Mural de los Poblanos. Not only does this atmospheric spot serve up some exquisite food, but it’s decorated by a series of murals by local artist Antonio Alvarez Moran ($25).
After dinner, stop in at Belgian Beer & Bistro for a beer ($4), or try a more local brew with some fermented maguey sap at Sapito Pulquero ($3). Follow the locals to the livelier bars later on, and get into the poblano party spirit!
