The seaside resort of Pula is a top destination for visitors to Croatia, and you can have a lot of fun for less than $100.
Head for breakfast at Bistro Alighieri, close to the ancient Pula Arena. Try to nab one of the outside tables so you can watch the world go by on the square as you chow down on traditional Istrian food ($10).
Pop into the Pula Arena, the ancient Roman Amphitheatre in the middle of town. It’s the only one in the world that still has four side towers, and you can visit for only $1. Take a stroll around town and visit the Temple of Augustus and the Arch of the Sergii to complete your mini tour of the city’s Roman sites.
For lunch, head to Trattoria Vodnjanka. It’s a family-run joint a short walk from the center, but it’s worth the journey for the Istrian cuisine such as game stew and octopus salad ($20).
In the afternoon take a boat trip to the Brijuni Islands, where President Tito used to go to relax. Take a ride on a miniature train and look at the exotic animals in the safari park ($25).
Head back to the mainland for dinner at Siam Thai, where you can take a break from Istrian cooking with a taste of Asian-Mediterranean fusion cuisine ($25) before a few drinks at Bounty ($10).
