Set at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the small Virginia city of Roanoke has much to offer in the way of small-town charm, outdoor excursions and a healthy dose of peace and quiet.
A day in Western Virginia should start with a stop at Mill Mountain Coffee and Tea, a quaint downtown coffee shop that serves freshly brewed coffee and a bevy of sweets.
Familiarize yourself with the history of the region by visiting the O. Winston Link Museum, where an exhibit of Link’s photos depict the last few years of the steam railroad industry in Western Virginia
While downtown around lunchtime, make a point to stop by Big Lick Brewing Company, Roanoke’s pride and joy of beer brewing. The beer house serves food from neighboring restaurants as well as its own on-site, hand-brewed beers.
After lunch, head (or stay) outside and explore Roanoke Valley Greenways, a walking/biking trail that snakes along the Roanoke River and passes a handful of riverside parks.
As the sun sets, make your way to the top of Mill Mountain where the giant Roanoke Star shines over the city as the world’s largest free-standing, illuminated star, a great spot for photos of Roanoke and beyond.
Round out the day with a hearty dinner of Southern barbecue at Mission BBQ, where plates of brisket, pulled pork or sausage cost less than $10.
