Located in the Lerma Valley in the northwest part of Argentina at the foothills of the Andes Mountains is the small but charming city of Salta. Nicknamed Salta La Linda — Salta the Beautiful — the city has become a popular tourist destination due to its colonial architecture, warm, dry weather and beautiful natural scenery.
The local culture, though, is a blend of Spanish and gaucho, giving it a distinctive identity that can be found in the music, food and entertainment throughout the city.
In the center of Salta is the iconic Plaza 9 de Julio, a large square surrounded by the city’s most beautiful attractions and cultural landmarks. From the square, you can visit the Cathedral Shrine, the French-style Museum of Contemporary Art, the 18th-century Cabildo cathedral and the neoclassical Museum of High Mountain Archaeology, which houses artifacts from the Incan civilization. Museum entry prices are seldom more than $1–2.
For some prime people watching, stroll the pedestrian streets of Alberdi, Florida and Caseros, home to great restaurants, pubs, cafés and live music at night.
Rising above the city in the east is the San Bernardo Hill. From the summit — accessible by car, cable car or stairway — visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the entire valley.
Dining in Salta is a treat. The city is the center of a major Argentinian wine-growing region, so every meal is accompanied by outstanding wine.
For cheap options where you won’t sacrifice flavor and authenticity, head to Mercado Municipal San Miguel. Though it’s not exactly a restaurant, the market offers cheap options, such as traditional empanadas and fresh fruit and vegetables for little cost. El Solar del Convento is a popular spot for tourist and locals. The restaurant, situated between Plaza 9 de Julio and the beautiful Church of St. Francis, offers outdoor seating and serves locally inspired specialties and large portions for a reasonable price. As an added bonus, guests receive sparkling wine on arrival. Viejo Jack is a parilla, or barbecue spot, offering a quieter, off-the-beaten track vibe. The restaurant isn’t necessarily a budget spot, but given the portion sizes and quality, it’s a great value.
There are a couple options for getting around the city of Salta. A car is perhaps the best way to get around, and rentals are easy and inexpensive. Most places within the city are accessible by foot, though, which eliminates the need to pay for public transportation.
