Under $100: Sapporo, Japan

Sapporo is the capital of the mountainous northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. Known for its skiing and annual snow festival, this city is a great place for families and those visiting with friends or by themselves.

Visit Marumugi, a popular bakery first thing in the morning. Locals love the food and they’ll be out of most things by noon. Plan to spend around $5–7 here for a few baked goods.

After, head to the Sapporo Beer Museum. This amazing museum is completely free to tour. It includes exhibitions on the history of beer in Japan, a long interesting history. At the end of the tour, you have opportunity to do beer tastings for a small fee. This should not cost you more than $10. From here, grab lunch at the neighboring beer halls, where it’s an all-you-can-drink beer and all-you-can-eat mutton BBQ. Be prepared to spend around $25.

Have some fun at the Shiroi Koibito Park theme park. A local chocolate company runs it and has numerous chocolate-related exhibits. There are also windows that allow visitors to peer into the factory and watch the process. This is a fun place to bring a family or any chocolate lover.

Wind down the day with dinner at Gotsubo. This hot spot is highly reviewed by previous guests and sells a variety of shellfish for a reasonable price. Splurging here will only set you back around $10.
