Under $100 / Europe

Dating to the fifth century B.C., the Romans (known then as Tàrraco) once ruled the seaside town of Tarragona, which today is a history-laden city that is one of the southernmost regions in the Spanish state of Catalonia. About an hour-and-a-half south of Barcelona, Tarragona is home to its own repertoire of architecture, history and culture.

Greet the day with a leisurely stroll through the streets of Tarragona’s Old Town (Casco Antigo), including a visit to the Art Deco central market and a stop to admire the towering Gothic-style cathedral. It’s not difficult to find a strong café con leche and pastry as cafeterias are around every corner.

For a heaping helping of Catalan cuisine, schedule a late-afternoon lunch (Spanish style) at Restaurant Sentits where approximately $16 gets you a four-course meal including a drink.

Spend the afternoon touring the ancient Roman ruins including the famed Pont del Diable (aqueduct), the amfiteatre (ancient Roman amphitheater on the coast) and the ruins of the Roman Circus.

After 8 p.m., snag a table amid the stone walls of Raco de l’Abat for a bottle of Catalan wine and a plethora of traditional dishes like sardines, salmon, sausages and desserts like crema catalana.
