Under $100: Toronto

With Canada turning 150 and Toronto just a hop and a skip away from most of us in the Northeast, there’s no reason you shouldn’t visit this modern, booming city.

Start your day with a trip to the St. Lawrence Market for breakfast. Grab the most famous sandwich in the city, the peameal bacon sandwich at Carousel Bakery. Thick cuts of pork piled high between two soft buns with a slather of mustard? There’s no better way to get your introduction to the city. Be sure to browse while you’re there. With plenty to see, smell and taste, the St. Lawrence Market is a foodie paradise, and breakfast for less than $10 comes easy (just be sure to bring Canadian cash).

If you fancy a walk and some history, make your way to the Distillery District. Filled with Victorian industrial buildings and interspersed with interesting art, it’s a hip neighborhood where there’s always something going on. Stop in one of the many shops or art galleries or grab a cup of coffee or hot chocolate from Cacao 70, a unique Canadian chain, where cozy cups of their signature drinks start at just $4.25.

Then, get a taste of Canadian history in honor of the country’s significant milestone anniversary. The Royal Ontario Museum is the country’s largest museum displaying art, cultural and natural artifacts, with more than 6 million items in 40 exhibition spaces. Permanent displays include South Asian art, gems, Egyptian artifacts and dinosaurs. Tickets are just $20.

See all of Toronto (or at least a good chunk of it) from the top of CN Tower. The glass floor of the observation deck is not for the fearful. Tickets are $36.

While there, end your day with dinner at Horizons, one of three restaurants located at the tower. Horizons is situated on the LookOut Level with a rotating menu.
