Under $100 / Europe

Visiting the cultural center of northern Italy is a memorable and attainable experience. Turin, the capital of the Piedmont region and the first capital city of Italy, is located on the west bank of the Po River, surrounded by the western Alpine arch and Superga Hill.

The city offers a rich culture and history, known for its many art galleries, restaurants, churches, opera houses, gardens, theaters, museums and other cultural centers. Without paying a dime, visitors can admire the Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Neo-Classical and Art Nouveau architecture and the city’s several public squares built between the 16th and 18th centuries.

Considering this is Italy we’re talking about, food should be first priority. Try some traditional Piedmontese cuisine at Gofreria Piemonteisa, a small eatery that serves authentic street food — a tasty and affordable alternative to fast food.

For a simple, affordable and authentic meal, grab a bite at Poormanger, which focuses on whole foods and quality ingredients, or at Lo Sbarco, a popular spot for budget foodies.

Enjoy an affordable lunch outside in the Piazza San Carlo, one of the most beautiful spots in Turin. The Piazza was designed in the 17th century and features stunning twin churches, Santa Cristina and San Carlo; a 1838 bronze statue of Emanuele Filiberto; portico buildings; and cafés and restaurants.

Grab a sweet treat at Gelateria Silvano, a historic ice cream parlor serving Piedmont gelatos, sweets, chocolate and sorbets. Local favorite flavors include gianduja, Piedmont nocciola and Pistacchio di Bronte.

A visit to Turin is not complete without some history. Experience Italy’s anti-fascist struggles at the Museo del Carcere LE NUOVE, a former prison built between 1854 and 1869. In 2010, a bunker was discovered 60 feet under ground, now open to the public. Wander the cells in which people were contained, and discover stories from the First World War and the Red Biennium. The Museo del Carcere is only €6 to enter, or €4 with a Turin card.

Stroll the Porta Palazzo Market, one of the largest open-air markets in Europe selling local food goods, gifts, clothes and more for extremely affordable prices.

Experience Turin’s contemporary culture with a visit to the Teatro della Caduta, a hidden gem housing a theater, cabaret and café offering free live performances.

Be part of a long-standing tradition with a ride on the Tranvia Sassi-Superga, a popular tram route up to the Basilica di Superga, for only a few euro. At the top of the hill, you’ll find the beautiful Basilica di Superga, a Baroque masterpiece built between 1717 and 1731, and panoramic views of Turin.

Take a walk up Monte dei Cappuccini, where you’ll find the historic Church of Saint Mary of the Hill, a convent and the National Mountain Museum.

Stroll Via Garibaldi, a historic street full of boutiques, restaurants, cafés, beautiful churches and historic landmarks. Here you’ll find traces of the antique Roman city. Visit San Lorenzo Church, built in 1668 and located in the northwestern corner of Piazzo Castello. The church is free to visit and is renowned for its stunning interior.

For only €22, get a Turin + Piemonte card, good for a maximum of three admissions to museums for one day. The pass grants access to more than 60 museums, exhibitions, landmarks, castles, fortresses and monuments and can be easily purchased through Turin Tourism. The pass also provides discounts on public transportation.

Getting around Turin is easy and cheap, with a widespread network of buses and trams that reach every corner of the city. The SADEM bus runs every 30–40 minutes from the airport to Turin’s Porta Nuova train station, only €5 with the Turin + Piemonte Card.
