Under $100 / Europe

Many young travelers are embarking on solo trips around the world, and those wanting to do the same fear the expenses that may come with it, but who is to say traveling in cities needs to be expensive? Here are some places and activities in Berlin, Germany, including accommodations, for under $100.

Accommodation

Hostels are a popular choice among young travelers, and Berlin boasts a number of high-rated hostels with great amenities, at an affordable price. Travelers can book a bed at Pfefferbett Hostel, located in the heart of Berlin, for as little as $30 a night. With clean bathrooms and showers, free WiFi, and an on-site restaurant and bar, this hostel is the perfect place to stay when visiting Berlin.

No visit to a German city is complete without trying currywurst. Berlin is riddled with restaurants and street vendors selling this delicious dish, featuring a large pork sausage covered in a curry-flavored ketchup. Enjoy a currywurst meal with fries for $5-7 dollars total. Curry Mitte and Curry 61 are two popular eateries for this dish.

For more of a sit-down meal, head to Schnitzelei, a classic German restaurant with favorites like schnitzel. Guests can enjoy a meal for under $22 dollars or indulge in some German tapas for as little as $12.

To enjoy some authentic German beers, The Lemke boasts an extensive list of local beers for guests to try. Sit outside and have a bottle or pint of beer for $4-8. For more of a beer garden experience, head to Schönwetter in Mauerpark. This bar offers beach chairs under string lights, and guests should order the Karmeliten Radler, a blend of lemonade and Carmelite beer for around $3.50.

Sites and Attractions

Many sites in Berlin are free to visit. Head to Brandenburg Gate and take in its magnificence. Sunset is a great time to see the gate as the pink sky illuminates the towering structure and statue on top.

Visiting the Reichstag is also free. Make sure to secure a reservation, as the site is a popular attraction for visitors. The Reichstag invites guests to venture to its top floor and look out over Berlin in its iconic glass dome. The Berlin Wall is a must-see as well, with nearly a mile of stunning and moving artwork displayed on every panel of remaining wall.

As a city with a rich history, Berlin contains several memorials in honor of the lives lost in World War II. The Jewish memorial and Sinti and Roman memorial are open for visitors to walk through and reflect on the city’s darker past. Both memorials are thoughtfully laid out to mirror the emotions felt by the victims.

To learn more about Germany during World War II and to see one of the former sites of the Nazi Regime, visit the Topography of Terror. This site not only showcases the layout of the former buildings but also includes an indoor exhibition on the SS and police and their war crimes.

What to Do During a Trip to Morro Bay, California

No, it’s not Monterey Bay. We’re talking Morro Bay, California, located about a 2.5-hour drive to the south, about halfway between San Jose and Los Angeles. A quieter destination, Morro Bay offers plenty for the outdoor adventurer to enjoy.
