Start your day with breakfast at Breeze ’n Bites. This eatery offers beautiful views of the ocean while you dine as early as 7:30 a.m. to get a head start on your day. Even if you’re not looking for a full breakfast, visitors still recommend stopping by and enjoying a cappuccino on the patio.
Bonaire is known as one of the best shore diving sites in the Caribbean, so you’d be remiss to not take advantage. The Bonaire Marine Park offers 86 dive sites with views of 57 species of coral and 350 species of fish. Shore diving spots are marked, but it’s advised to go with a certified tour operator on the island. You can generally find a recommended operator through your hotel, and some even offer diving complimentary among their various other water sports activities. Keep in mind a fee is required to dive within Bonaire National Marine Park, $25 for scuba divers and $10 for non-scuba divers.
If you’d rather not get your feet wet, the island has plenty of hiking. The Washington Slagbaai National Park is a favorite spot, with trails for both novice and experienced hikers. The rougher trails are worth it, as they reward you with sweeping views of the surroundings.
For more outdoor fun, grab a pair of binoculars and head toward Pekelmeer Flamingo Sanctuary, one of only four places in the world where flamingos meet to breed. Located on the southern end of the island on a salt pan, the sanctuary houses more than 10,000 flamingos. While tourists can’t go directly inside the sanctuary, they can get a great front-row spot to watch the flocks in action at Pink Beach or Willemstoren Lighthouse.
For dinner or lunch, grab a meal on the patio at At Sea. The restaurant is located inside a century-old home offering views of the ocean. The menu features a lot of fresh seafood, alongside beef and cheese imports from the United States and Europe. You can easily enjoy a nice meal for less than $30.
