If you’re visiting Seoul, South Korea, consider taking a 50-minute, high-speed train ride down to Daejeon.
Start your day at the Expo Science Park, site of the city’s 1993 World Expo. Today the area redeveloped into a technology complex. Taking the elevator up the observation tower will run you about $2. Daejeon has a large number of museums to visit as well, ranging from the Museum of Art to the National Science Museum, while visiting the exhibits and planetarium will cost $4.
For lunch, try some Korean street food in the Jungango. Odeng stands will sell fried, Korean fish cakes for about 50 cents. You can also get topokki, a rice and egg cake covered in spicy sauce, as well as a sweet bun for desert, which strongly resembles an inside-out pancake with syrup inside.
Relax from all the walking by heading to Yuseong Hot Springs Resort. Korea is known for its volcanic hot springs, where the waters are filled with minerals like calcium, potassium, carbonic acid and radium. The alkaline mixture is beneficial for your skin and the best part is it’s free.
While not comparable to Seoul, Dunsan-dong is the city’s nightlife center. Start your night with some bars like Yellow Taxi and Watering Ghost before ending at After Hours, an upscale house music club with just $10 for cover.
