Dunedin is one of those places where you could find yourself easily going over your budget if not careful, so follow this one-day guide to seeing the city without breaking the bank if you’re tight on cash.
Start the morning at the Ironic Café and Bar for a delicious home-style breakfast with some of their prize-winning coffee. A meal here will run you no more than $15 a plate.
From there, make your way to the Otago Museum to experience fascinating displays on Maori and Pacific Islander culture and history in the area. Entrance here is free and it won’t take long to have a peak, then make your way to the railway station to have a look at Kiwi ingenuity in action.
For lunch, head to Plato to sample some delectable New Zealand seafood and great wine offerings. It’s still the middle of the day, so try and limit yourself to one glass. A meal here will likely run you around $30 a plate.
Botanical gardens are something New Zealand does extremely well and this is certainly true at the Dunedin Botanic Garden, so make your way there after lunch. They have various collections going on at any given time, so things are always different. Walking the grounds is completely free and a great way to take in the country’s awe-inspiring landscape.
For dinner, head back to town to Speight’s Alehouse. You won’t find any fancy fare here, just good old-fashioned Kiwi cooking at its best. The lamb shanks are certainly worth a try, though a little on the expensive side, so budget for at least $30 here.
