Welcome to this island in the French Caribbean, where the volcanic mountains and pristine beaches mix with top-notch French cuisine and unforgettable experiences.
Grab breakfast at the highly recommended bakery, Coup D’Coeur, where you’ll find pastries, quiche and fresh juices. You can have a nice, light breakfast for less than $15.
Head to Habitation Clément for a tour of the rum distillery and plantation, as well as its museum. Samples are provided, and you can also make purchases in the rum shop. However, you don’t have to be a rum lover to enjoy the visit. The history of the spot itself is worthwhile, and the grounds are picturesque, with art sculptures placed throughout. Admission is less than $15.
If sipping rum in the tropics isn’t your pace, enjoy some adventure with a trip to Mont Pelée. The volcano is active, though, so don’t go alone and listen to the safety tips provided when hiking on what to do if the volcano erupts. You can park at the base and hike the rest of the way up; it’s recommended you only go on clear days for the best views of the island.
Of course, you can’t visit the Caribbean without a proper day spent on the beach. One of the favorites on Martinique is Les Salines beach. The water is calm, making it easy for weak swimmers to enjoy the spray, and there are accessible restrooms and showers for convenience. However, the beach can be crowded in the mornings and on weekends, so it’s the perfect spot for catching a few hours of sun in the afternoon.
Enjoy dinner at Le Petibonum, where the casual atmosphere encourages beachside drinks and sips in the shade. The great menu is filled with local seafood. Your food will come in less than $25, but if you want to rent one of the on-site loungers by the water, it’ll be an extra $10, but with a complimentary drink. Visit on certain days of the month for beach parties with a DJ and no cover charge.
