Skopje is described as Europe’s most entertaining and eclectic small capital city. There are tons of sites to see and food to eat in this underappreciated city. Begin your day grabbing a coffee in Old Town. It shouldn’t cost more than a few dollars. Wander the streets to appreciate the Turkish influence in the architecture in one of the most aesthetically pleasing parts of Skopje.
Take a walk along Skopje’s Kale Fortress. It’s not well-kept and the overgrown shrubbery will have to be pushed out of your path along the way. However, the fortress is free and provides great views of Old Town and the surrounding areas. Walk the entire length of the fortress and take memorable snaps of the view.
Spend the rest of the day at Matka Canyon. It’s a spectacular gorge and lake home to several monasteries, hiking paths, climbing routes and caves. Rent a boat for less than $20 to travel to the caves. This is a great area to explore and take pictures.
Go to the Canyon Matka Hotel and Restaurant for dinner. Budget $30 as it’s a little on the expensive side. Make a reservation ahead of time so there’s no waiting for a table.
