Under $100: Stehekin

The remote community of Stehekin is perched on the north shore of Lake Chelan, a 55-mile-long waterway snaking through Washington State’s North Cascades. The town is inaccessible by car, so all visitors must come by boat, plane or hiking trail.

It’s easy to spend just one day in Stehekin, hitting the highlights of the town and the surrounding area. A round-trip ticket on the Lady of the Lake ferry will cost $40.50 in the high season, which runs May through October.

Spend time strolling through town, enjoying the picturesque lakeshore with its Caribbean-hued water and impressive mountainous shore. Walk on the road heading north, and enjoy baked goods and lunch at the Stehekin Pastry Company. Expect to spend about $15. Next, walk to The Garden, a small farm that produces honey, maple syrup and goat cheese. You can also check out the Buckner Orchard, a historic homestead now run by the National Park Service.

Back in town, enjoy a meal on the porch at the North Cascades Lodge, which overlooks the lake. Your remaining budget will help you fill up on a burger and a beer or glass of wine ahead of the journey back down the lake.
